Pack Structure and Time Commitment
A scout will attend 3-4 events each month through a combination of pack and den events.
The Pack includes all Scouts (K-5). The Pack is divided into Dens which consist of 5-10 scouts within a single grade.
A detailed calendar is available under events.
A typical month includes:
Pack Meeting
Third Wednesday of each month, 5:15-6:15pm.
At pack meetings we celebrate achievements, have guest presenters like Nature Lab, firefighters or park rangers, participate in fun activities as a pack, and plan outings.
Pack Outings
variable, usually on a weekend.
Pack outings are fun, optional events for the entire pack! These include:
- Camping twice a year
- Winterfest
- Archery
- Water rockets
- Pinewood derby
- Service projects
- Hikes
- And more!
Den Meetings
Set per Den, typically one hour on a weeknight.
Dens meet twice a month (once for kindergartners) to complete Adventures. This is the core Cub Scout programming that teaches key concepts in areas like outdoor skills, fitness, teamwork, citizenship and service through fun, active activities.
Cost
Cost should never be a barrier to participating in scouting. Financial aid and fundraising opportunities are available to ensure anyone interested in scouting has the opportunity to participate.
Cost per scout is around $300/year including the upfront cost to purchase uniforms, along with annual dues funding the national program and local pack activities.
The pack participates in the national scouting fundraiser to sell popcorn. All scouts are expected to participate via grocery store tables, door-to-door, or online sales. A portion of the money each scout raises can be used to offset their costs.
Parent/Adult/Family participation
Cub scouting is a family oriented and volunteer-led. Adult volunteers are critical to the success of the program. Adults are always welcome at all events, and siblings are welcome at many pack meetings and outings.
In our youngest Dens – Lions (Kindergarten) and Tigers (1st grade) – an adult partner is required to participate in all den activities. In the older Dens, two adult leaders are required; other families may drop off at most den events.
Adults are asked to support the pack by assisting in the planning, logistics and execution of pack events. There are many different ways to help out, aligned with a wide variety of interests and time commitments!
These include things like:
- Lead a Den, or assist as an Assistant Den Leader
- (Co)-organizing a pack outing, hike or den adventure
- Helping with setup or cleanup at events and meetings
- Purchasing food and supplies
- Organizing popcorn sales
- Leading an activity at a campout, or participating in a campfire skit
- Tracking scout progress against adventures
- Taking photos at events
See volunteering for more info.
Scouting and Religion
The Scout Law includes “reverence” as a core scout value, and each rank includes one Adventure that references God or religion. Pack 174 welcomes families of all (or no) faiths or spiritual practices. As a Pack we emphasize that reverence starts with respecting each others’ beliefs. We do not include any religious components in our meetings. When an Adventure includes a religious or spiritual component, we ask that each family completes those requirements with their scouts in line with that family’s beliefs.
